Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs)

Gateway Psychology conducts functional capacity assessments, completed by our team of experienced clinical neuropsychologists.

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive evaluation designed to assess an individual’s ability to perform daily activities and engage in meaningful life roles, such as working, studying, or managing personal and household tasks. When conducted by a clinical neuropsychologist, an FCA focuses on how a person’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioural functioning impacts their overall functional capacity and independence. These assessments provide detailed, evidence-based information to support applications, funding requests, or care planning in a range of contexts.

Functional Capacity Assessments and the NDIS

Functional Capacity Assessments are often used to provide evidence for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), either when: * Applying to access the NDIS * Preparing for plan reviews or reassessments * Requesting specific supports, therapies, or services Our neuropsychologist’s FCA can offer valuable input by: * Demonstrating how cognitive or psychological difficulties limit a person’s functional capacity across core NDIS domains (e.g., communication, social interaction, learning, self-management, and self-care). * Clarifying support needs, including the level and type of assistance required at home, in the community, or at work. * Assisting with the evidence required for NDIS Access Requests. * Informing NDIS planning and goal-setting, particularly for participants with complex presentations. Our assessments align with the NDIS legislative criteria, including the need to show that a condition is permanent and results in substantially reduced functional capacity.

Who Can Benefit From a FCA?

A neuropsychological FCA is helpful for: * Individuals with developmental, neurological, or mental health conditions * People requiring evidence for the NDIS, Disability Support Pension (DSP), or other supports * Professionals such as support coordinators, GPs, psychologists, or case managers seeking formal documentation for their clients * People facing barriers to education or employment who may need reasonable adjustments or support

Neuropsychologist vs Occupational Therapist: What’s the Difference?

While both neuropsychologists and occupational therapists (OTs) can conduct FCAs, they focus on different domains. An OT assessment may focus on functional performance relating to physical, sensory, and environmental tasks, which is ideal for individuals with physical disability or fine/gross motor challenges as their primary disability. An assessment with an OT is recommended for individuals who are seeking funding towards home modifications and assistive technology. In contrast, a neuropsychological FCA is particularly helpful when the person's challenges are “invisible”, such as difficulties with attention, memory, organisation, social interaction, communication, mental health, or emotional regulation.

Common Conditions Assessed

Our Functional Capacity Assessments are best suited to individuals with a primary disability of: * Autism * ADHD * Intellectual Disability * Acquired Brain Injury or Stroke * Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, or other mental health conditions * Dementia or age-related cognitive decline * Neurological conditions * Learning disabilities or developmental delays

What’s Involved in the Assessment?

Our FCAs are tailored to meet the individuals’ needs, typically involving: * Review of relevant medical and allied health documents * A comprehensive 1-2 hour clinical interview with the client and caregiver (when relevant) * Administration of standardised functional assessments, such as: — World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) — Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales 3rd Edition (Vineland-3) — Additional tools may be used as needed. * A comprehensive written report outlining background information, functional impacts, and tailored recommendations (this document is typically 15-25 pages in length). * A feedback session to explain the findings and discuss recommendations Please note, that we do not provide Home Modification Assessments.
